Background of the Study
Food security is a critical determinant of child health, growth, and overall development. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) defines food security as the availability, accessibility, and affordability of sufficient, safe, and nutritious food to meet dietary needs for an active and healthy life (FAO, 2024). Inadequate food security leads to malnutrition, stunted growth, cognitive impairments, and increased susceptibility to infections in children (World Health Organization [WHO], 2023).
In Nigeria, food insecurity remains a major public health challenge, particularly in rural and economically disadvantaged communities. Kwara State, located in north-central Nigeria, is known for its agricultural economy; however, factors such as poverty, climate change, and economic instability have contributed to food insecurity among households (Adeyemo et al., 2023). Many families struggle to provide balanced diets for their children, leading to widespread malnutrition, stunting, and underweight conditions, which have long-term effects on cognitive and physical development (Ogunleye & Hassan, 2024).
Research has shown that malnourished children are more likely to have poor academic performance, weakened immune systems, and higher risks of chronic diseases later in life (Nigerian Bureau of Statistics [NBS], 2024). Despite ongoing government interventions such as school feeding programs and agricultural subsidies, food security challenges persist. Understanding the impact of food security on child growth and development in Kwara State is crucial for designing effective policies and intervention strategies.
Statement of the Problem
Despite being an agriculturally productive state, food insecurity continues to threaten child growth and development in Kwara State. Many households face challenges in accessing sufficient and nutritious food due to economic hardships, high food prices, and climate-related disruptions in food production (FAO, 2024). Malnutrition-related conditions such as stunting, wasting, and micronutrient deficiencies remain prevalent among children under five years, raising concerns about long-term developmental outcomes (WHO, 2023).
There is a need for empirical data on how food security directly influences child growth patterns in Kwara State. Limited research has examined the specific dietary habits, nutritional intake, and growth parameters of children within the region. This study aims to assess the effect of food security on child growth and development, providing insights that can inform policies aimed at improving food access and nutrition programs.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on households with children under five years in Kwara State, examining their food security status and its effects on child growth. Limitations may include reliance on self-reported food consumption data and the inability to control for genetic factors affecting growth.
